Cupping is a treatment used in Traditional Chinese Medicine [TCM].
It is often used for pain, injuries of the back/shoulders/neck, disc herniation, IT band tension, knee pain, osteoarthritis. etc.
Thinking of it from a musculoskeletal standpoint, it works like the inverse of massage. Rather than pressing deep into the tissue, suction is applied to the cups which pulls the tissue up and out to break up tension and stretch the fibers, as well as improve lymphatic waste removal.
From a TCM view, it helps to break up stagnation of circulation, release heat from the body, activate certain acupressure points, and restore the healthy flow of qi. Although they may leave a bit of a mark, it is not painful but actually leaves you feeling less pain than before.
Cupping is often paired with acupuncture treatments for optimal effect, but it can be used alone as well.
