What is Acupuncture all about?
Acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine [TCM] where ultra thin needles are inserted into specific points.
- These points are located along 14 different "Meridians" or "Channels" in the body, and there are 365 classical acupuncture points.
- These points have been mapped out over thousands of years and have specific, reproducible actions in the body.
- Some of these actions can be described in terms of what they do in Chinese Medicine - for example, clear heat, tone yin, promote the flow of qi.
- Alternatively, they can be described in the way we think about things with Western Medicine, such as promoting circulation, reducing muscular tension, calming anxiety.
How does it work?
Acupuncture can be explained in two ways:
Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture
Points are chosen based on a TCM diagnosis, meaning all of your symptoms will be looked at as a whole in order to find out where the imbalances lie. We have complex systems of channel that require energy flow. When there is a disruption of low, there is a disruption of health. Acupuncture points are chosen to: - Remove blockages - Restore flow - Stimulate healing - Balance yin & yang - Produce actions that will help resolve the health concern |
Medical / Dry Needling / Myofascial Release Acupuncture
This type of acupuncture is used more frequently for injuries and issues with the muscles and nervous system. Although some traditonal points are used, points are chosen based on the injury itself, in order to: - Promote circulation - Increase white blood cell activity to stimulate healing - Improve lymphatic flow [immune activity] - Decrease muscular tension - Reduce trigger points which cause direcly cause pain - Stimulation of peripheral nerves to regulate systems in the body. |
Dr. Ashley uses a combination of these techniques, depending on your health concern.
